Morris Rosenfeld (1885-1968) was a celebrated maritime photographer of the early 20th century. He was famous for capturing yachts and working boats in dramatic and dangerous sea conditions. His images helped define how sailing/yachting were visually documented. He photographed from nearby boats to capture proximity and scale. His work showed period rigging, crew work, and racing conditions. Many of his pieces are included in maritime history books and exhibitions. His work bridges journalism, sport documentation, and fine art photography.
The Nina, pictured here, was one of the sailing yachts Rosenfeld photographed during the golden age of American yacht racing (1910-1930s). This is a vintage sepia-toned silver bromide print that depicts Nina in a brisk breeze on the high seas. Nina was designed by Starling Burgess and built to sail in a transatlantic race to Spain in 1928. For decades Nina seemed immortal on the race circuit.
